Workflow with Kate Browne, Managing Editor at Finder Australia

In this edition of Workflow, we have Kate Browne, Managing Editor at Finder Australia, talking about using walk-in wardrobe for podcast recording and her shared love for the Hamilton soundtrack.

Workflow is an interview series by Balance the Grind to get a glimpse into people’s working styles and workspaces. If you’re interested in sharing your workflow, submit it here!

Describe what you do: I’m the managing editor at Finder Australia’s most visited comparison site, media spokesperson and co-host of the Finder podcast Pocket Money.

How do you like your coffee: Double shot almond flat white please.

Device(s) you use: 13‑inch MacBook Pro for writing, editing, comms including slack and zoom calls. iPhone 11, USB microphone (for recording podcasts), SONY wireless noise cancelling headphones for music, listening back to podcast recordings and for general sanity.

Describe your working style in one sentence: I’m not a morning person so before lunch is when I try to get my basic tasks ticked off, updating the Finder homepage, checking media releases, WIP meetings and answering messages.

The afternoon is when I like to get into the more complex stuff especially if I am writing or editing other people’s work. Of course doing media for Finder means I am always on standby to do an interview by phone or jump in front of a news crew or do live tv so often my carefully planned day gets turned inside out so I don’t get too hung up about the daily agenda changing at a moments notice.

What does your workspace look like: Normally I am in the Finder Sydney office enjoying my adjustable standing desk, Aeron chair, screen monitor and excellent internet.

Right now I’m working from home alongside my partner and two kids who are homeschooling so I’ve had to get creative with all four of us crammed in the house all day. I work on my laptop at the kitchen bench, outside in the courtyard, I do TV interviews out on the street and when I need some peace and quiet I work from my bed in the bedroom with the door shut.

I’ve discovered that the walk-in wardrobe in my room makes a great studio for recording podcasts because all the clothes in there mean it has nice acoustics (and is away from my noisy kids and cat.) Now my primary work weapon of choice is a small stepladder which acts as a stand for my laptop and microphone. How things have changed from early March!

Do you have a favourite playlist for work: Me and my two daughters are total musical theatre nerds, so at the moment it’s the soundtrack from Hamilton. 46 tracks and every single one a total knockout.

Who would you like to nominate for the next workflow interview: Paridhi Jain from Skilled Smart.
