Describe what you do: I’m a marketing specialist who provides strategic, creative solutions to the financial services and legal sectors. I started my agency, Create Design & Marketing, based on the philosophy that a robust strategy is the foundation for meaningful ideas, messaging and designs.
We’re now in unprecedented times where astute companies realise the value that can be gained through disruption to redefine relationships and expand markets. As a marketer, it’s a rare privilege to be able to be pioneering in a period of turbulence where vision, direction and reinterpretation of ‘business as usual’ is embraced.
How do you like your coffee: Strong!
Device(s) you use: I like to be mobile and keep things light. As such, we operate in a cloud-based environment and I’m always plugged into my iPhone, or on my Surface Pro laptop.
Describe your working style in one sentence: We have multiple clients with scores of time sensitive projects that I need to be on top of at any given point of time. I therefore need to be extremely disciplined in my working style to optimise efficiency and productivity both for myself, and my team.
This largely revolves around ‘triaging’ activities using a Time Management Matrix that batches tasks into quadrants, and prioritises tasks based on their urgency and level of required response. Where possible, I also batch work by client to stay focussed and avoid the temptation of multitasking (which can easily cause a loss of momentum).
What does your workspace look like: Fluid. Having a high degree of interface with our clients and partners means I’m always on the move. My laptop and hotspot facilitate my preferred ‘nomadic’ workspace that enables me to bounce between our office in Sydney’s CBD, cafés, client’s offices and my home office. I like that no day is ever the same and that I have the flexibility to select my location to align with the thought process required for the task at hand.
How does your workspace affect your creative process: It’s everything. As I alluded to in the above, my workspace directly affects my creativity. If I’m writing an article or a complex strategy, I need to be in a ‘cone of silence’ with absolutely no distractions – which perfectly aligns with my home office.
Alternatively, if I’m considering a highly creative project, such as a re-brand or logo, then I get inspiration from the frenetic pace of the city. As such, I tend to do my art direction and message development work-shopping at busy cafés.
Do you have a favourite playlist for work: I’ve always played classical piano, which tunes me out to the rest of the world. Similarly, I find that listening to a stream of classical music enhances my productivity by heightening my focus and tuning out white noise.
